The once hailed GMAT is now being replaced by recommendations, undergraduate transcripts, and professional experience for a growing number of schools. Some schools waive the GMAT requirement depending on a candidate’s previous academic performance and/or professional experience. Some colleges and universities have completely dropped the GMAT requirement from their list of admission requirements.

To date, there are over 100 higher education institutions that do not require students to take the GMAT for MBA program application.

This move to an online MBA no GMAT requirement system is great news for many budding MBA students online. For those who are returning to college after a 5 to 10-year break, studying for the GMAT may not be ideal. This offers students returning to college a way to leverage their past academic or professional experience instead of a taking standardized test.

If taking the GMAT or GRE seems overwhelming, this is a great path for you. The schools listed in our directory offer either complete GMAT waivers or have no GMAT or GRE requirement.

Admission Requirements Without GMAT

With or without GMAT scores, getting into the right school is competitive. However, if you do not have GMAT scores, other important factors may persuade the admissions team in your favor. Some important elements may include letters of recommendation, work experience, personal statements and an exceptional GPA. The following is a list of items that the top MBA programs with no GMAT will carefully examine:

Work Experience

In order to have a GMAT waiver, most programs require full time work experience for roughly 3 to 10 years. However, the field you work in generally does not matter, as long as you were able to show yourself as potential management material. Showing that you were excellent at teamwork and taking on additional responsibilities are also highly favorable.

Advanced Degrees

Earning a doctoral degree such as an M.D., J.S.D. or Ph.D. are generally viewed as a favorable GMAT waiver. Many institutions will accept other doctoral degrees as well. However, these other degrees must be from programs which required the GRE, or at least something comparable, prior to admissions.

Exceptional GPA

It is not easy to have the GMAT waived on an excellent undergraduate academics alone. However, it is possible, if you have outstanding grades in advanced classes that include analytical skills as well as advanced mathematics courses. Satisfying these requirements in addition to having a bachelor’s degree in a science, technology, engineering and math field may help. Additionally, a bachelor’s in accounting or finance will also show graduate-level maturity.

Professional Licensing

When added to sufficient work experience, a certification with a quantitative concentration, such as Six Sigma may qualify you for a GMAT waiver. Additional certifications may include CPA, FINRA, CFA and more. These courses tend to prove that you have the math skills and drive needed to succeed in an MBA program.

Letters of Recommendation

Including letters of recommendation from previous professors or supervisors is important when submitting your college application. However, when you are applying to an online MBA program, with no GMAT required, these letters become even more important. Your former supervisors may be able to discuss how well you climbed the corporate ladder. While your former teachers can speak to your learning potential. Both of these can speak volume to academic admission teams.

An essay or Personal Statement

Many MBA programs use the GMAT as a way to gauge your seriousness in earning a business degree. However, those programs that do not require the GMAT may rely heavily on your personal essay. This is to prove you are ready and willing to complete the rigid coursework required for your business degree.

EMBA Business School Programs That No Longer Require the GMAT or GRE:

If you’re applying to a top EMBA program this year (and, if you’ve been out of college for more than a while) you know the stress of even thinking that you might have to take the GMAT or GRE in order to get into a Top Ten bschool and advance your career. However, what you may not know, is that some of the most competitive Executive MBA programs no longer require the GMAT or other test scores to apply, and The Stern School of Business at New York University is one of the best of them, in my opinion, around!

Don’t believe me and want proof for yourself? Check out NYU Stern’s press release here that states that they are  no longer requiring EMBA or executive MBA candidates to take the GMAT or GRE.   Now, that doesn’t apply to full-time, regular MBA candidates, just EMBA’s (sorry MBA candidates!) as the school decided to drop the GMAT or GRE requirement due to its applicants’ usually stellar level of professional credentials and experience. That said,  EMBA b-school candidates will still have the option to submit their GMAT or GRE scores if they’d like (and a high score can never hurt, and by that I mean anything over 680), but the scores are no longer a requirement, and if you’re looking for a highly respected EMBA program in the center of New York City and the NY business world that lets you continue to work while you participate in a strong executive MBA environment, NYU Stern just might be for you.

The NYU Stern Executive MBA program is also known world-wide for its excellence in business, management, experience and professionalism. The program maintains a strong global initiative and prepares students for nothing but international excellence and success. Given that they no longer require the GMAT/GRE, NYU Stern executive MBA admissions has also developed a highly individualized approach to each applicant, and the application essays, admissions interview, and level of professional experience and leadership as detailed on the resume and in one’s essays, are paramount to making a strong impression and getting in.

Again though, applicants to NYU Stern’s full-time (the regular MBA) program are still required to submit test scores, and because EMBA applicants often submit to both types of business school programs anyway, you may already have scores you’ll want to use.

For those who don’t though, not having to take the GMAT or GRE is huge, and dropping the GMAT/GRE requirement for EMBA candidates is gaining popularity at some of the best and most competitive schools in the U.S. To date, other highly competitive EMBA programs that currently do not require the GMAT or GRE scores to my knowledge include: Chicago Booth School of Business, Kellogg School of Management, Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. So, plan accordingly and, as always, GOOD LUCK!
